Facility Updates

MacDonald Island Park Amenity & Activity Update - November 27, 2020

Due to the new measures announced by the Government of Alberta on Tuesday November 24, we have updated the list of amenities and activities available at MacDonald Island Park, including the amenities located in Shell Place.

Effective Friday November 27, the Syncrude Aquatic Centre at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre will remain open for pre-booked lane swimming and family cohort swimming, and the Legacy Dodge Fitness Centre and running track also remain open. The ice arenas are also available for private family bookings. The CNOOC fieldhouses are temporarily closed, along with the curling rink.

All amenities in Shell Place, including the HPTC, Don Scott McMurray Law Office Badminton Centre and indoor turf fieldhouse will be temporarily closed. Shell Place will be closed for public access during this time.

In addition, The Frosty Fox, The Clubhouse and Mac’s Snack Shack (hockey concession) are temporarily closed effective November 26. Our food service tenants remain open.

As the Government of Alberta announces the relaxation, revision or extension of the current restrictions, we will revisit these closures and reopen activities and amenities as appropriate.

Amenity Status

Why are some MacDonald Island Park amenities and activities currently unavailable?

On November 12, the Government of Alberta announced new public health measures for communities on the enhanced list, which includes Fort McMurray. On November 24, the Government announced further new measures and restrictions. These measures and restrictions have impacted the amenities and activities available at MacDonald Island Park.

Why is Shell Place closed to the public?

Under the new restrictions no amenities in Shell Place will remain open, so public access to the building is temporarily closed.

Why are the Frosty Fox, The Clubhouse and Mac’s Snack Shack food services closed?

The new measures and restrictions have impacted foot traffic in the facility, which has had a significant impact on customer visits to these food outlets. Given this reduction in demand, we have decided to temporarily close these food services.

How will this affect my membership?

All memberships that were activated prior to November 13 are still active at this time. Members who wish to put their membership on hold can do so until December 4 by contacting Guest Services at [email protected]

Can I cancel my membership?

If you have any questions or concerns regarding cancelling please contact MacDonald Island Park Guest Services at 780-791-0070 or [email protected]

Myself or my child are registered for programming; how will we be compensated for this?

All programs currently affected will receive a prorated credit onto their account for the remaining classes or may be extended after November 27. Refunds can be requested through MacDonald Island Park Guest Services at 780-791-0070 or [email protected]

Can I book the ice for shinny or group skating?

At this time due to the current public health measures we are unable to host team sport activities, training, development, games, or competitions such as hockey, shinny, basketball, soccer, volleyball, etc.

Are you taking arena bookings?

We are accepting private family bookings at the ice arenas. Sticks, pucks, and nets will not be allowed at this time. Bookings can be made through [email protected].
